Nutrition

Good nutrition is one of the essential ingredients for maintaining good health during cancer treatment. Chemotherapy, radiation therapy and surgery all impact the normal functioning of the body in some way, and eating the right foods can enhance the immune response, and the body’s ability to heal and regain energy.

However, the side effects from medications and treatments, and the healing process after surgery can influence the patient’s appetite and digestive ability. It is therefore critical to choose foods that the body can tolerate while maximizing nutrition. Good nutrition can help the patients to heal more quickly, be less susceptible to side-effects, and keep their stamina throughout treatment.

Our board certified oncology dietitians specialize in the nutritional needs of cancer patients, and they can provide the information and tools the patients need in making the best food choices for their individual obstacles and goals. If you would like to consult with our dietitian, please ask your doctor or any staff member.

Partners In Healing

Partners In Healing is a group of cancer survivors who volunteer their time to spend time providing peer support to patients currently undergoing cancer treatment. No one is more knowledgeable about the process than someone who has gone through it, and sharing their experience gives a real and meaningful sense of encouragement and strength to a patient. The volunteers visit with the patients as they receive treatment in the Cancer Center, and also with patients who are being treated in Hunterdon Medical Center. If requested, they may also provide support via telephone. Patients may request a visit from a Partners In Healing volunteer through their doctor, any other staff member at Hunterdon Regional Cancer Center, or call 908.788.2527.

Palliative Care

The Palliative Care Department at Hunterdon Medical Center provides specialized care to patients living with a long term illness. Their doctors and nurse practitioners are experts in the management of symptoms such as pain, nausea, and shortness of breath. They also will address the emotional components of chronic illness such as depression and anxiety.

The Palliative Care team will coordinate with your physicians and any other treatments you are receiving. You may request a referral through your physician, or call 908.237.7018 for an appointment.
